Understanding Water Quality Parameters
Water Quality Guide
About pH Level
pH measures how acidic or basic water is on a scale of 0-14. Pure water has a pH of 7 (neutral). WHO recommends a pH between 6.5 and 8.5 for drinking water to prevent corrosion and ensure proper chlorination effectiveness.
About TDS (Total Dissolved Solids)
TDS includes all inorganic salts and organic matter in water. WHO recommends a maximum of 1000 mg/L for drinking water. High TDS can cause water to taste salty and affect water quality for sensitive uses like laboratory work.
About Chlorine
Residual chlorine is added to kill harmful bacteria and viruses. WHO recommends maintaining 0.2-1.0 mg/L for effective disinfection. Excess chlorine can cause taste and odor issues, while too little may not provide adequate protection.
Quick Tips
• Test water regularly for consistent quality monitoring
• Keep records for long-term trend analysis
• Contact local authorities if water is unsafe
• Use proper testing equipment for accuracy
• Boiling can help in caution situations
